Our Cultural Tours to Turkana

Explore Kenya's history and the fascinating culture of East Turkana with Tekwa. Get in touch with people still following their traditions as pastoralists, fishermen or hunters and gatherers.

Our 8-day-tour leads as far North as Loiyangalani, a unique little town on the shores of the largest desert lake in the world. It takes us 3 days to reach there, 3 days during which we pass from fertile agricultural land to semi-arid territory and finally into the vast stone desert that characterizes Northern Kenya. In Loi we meet with some of the 14 ethnic groups living in Marsabit County. From Loiyangalani we cross over to North Horr – El Gade – Kalacha, three ll beautiful little oasis. Another highlight will be the drive through the Chalbi Desert, the largest salt desert in East Africa. On our way back to Nairobi we pass through Marsabit and Samburu.

Our 12-day tour takes you also up to Loiyangalani from where we continue up North to Alia Bay and Illeret at the Ethiopian border. At the Turkana Basin Institute (TBI) we dive into the earliest history of our forefathers. Later we visit one of the fossils’excavation sites. While in Loi we already met some of the ethnic groups living in Marsabit County and calling this dry, arid desert land their home. Up North we also interact with the Dassanach ,living around Illeret as well as across the border. There we shall also enjoy a typical Ethiopian lunch. On the way back to Nairobi we go through Marsabit and Samburu.
